new release!author niki chillemiNiki Chillemi writes classic murder mystery /detective novels. It's been said she writes literature that reads like pulp fiction. Plenty of action, a dash of grit, wry humor as her characters navigate through situations and relationships, and there's as an uplifting message. There's usually a national security/public safety underlying theme to her work. She likes her bad guys really bad, her good guys smarter and better. After enjoying several of her novels, I asked if I could post an interview on Inspired Ficton Books. I know you'll enjoy her fun, fast-paced novels. Here's Niki! Q: Do you have any magic for coming up with your titles? A: When I started out writing detective stories, I was using two-word titles. I don't know why. Snappy two-word titles just came to me. Harmful Intent, Deadly Designs, Blood Speaks, Courting Danger. I'd get an idea for a detective story and BAM, a two-word title would just come to me. Well, this one is a murder mystery with a national security twist. My heroine is not a detective or a private investigator. Still, I expected another two-word title would pop into my head as the plot was forming in my mind for ACTS OF MALICE. It didn't happen that way. Q: Your titles are snappy and fit your style. In addition to escaping into a wild fiction ride, what do you want the reader to take-away from this novel? A: First of all, I hope to honor all murder victims and families of victims. One of the things I wanted to show was the suffering of the families, particularly the widows. I'm a widow and although my husband wasn't murdered, I've learned there are stages of grief in general, and there are things, in particular, that all widows go through and share. My heroine joins a widows support group in this novel. She finds it very helpful and she makes friends there. As in all murder mysteries, the plot is driven forward by the hunt for the killers. But I feel this novel is more than that. Q: Thanks for staying sensitive to your readers. I find it fascinating how our struggles show up in our stories just when someone else can use the same encouragement. This novel is different than your others. What kind of research did you do, and how long do you spend researching? A: I did a lot of research for this novel. I went to two different public libraries and did online research. Several chapters are set in Argentina. One of my critique partners asked me if I'd been to Argentina and had spent time there. Q: I'm curious to know if you did go or if you have plans to visit. Here's a couple of fun questions. What is your fav thing to eat? Least fav? A: My fav is a lobster boil with corn and potatoes. My husband and I had that when we vacationed in Montauk a few summers. Of course, in Florida I've had a crawfish boil. My least fav, let's see, anything with bok choy or kale. Q: Funny. I was just told to start eating bok choy. I just put it in stir fry and don't notice it much! Last question. Describe yourself in three words. A: Well the three words could change slightly depending on the day I answer this. Most days I think you could say I'm intense, funny, studious. Though we haven't met in person, I'd have to say that through your writing, I would have to agree. Thanks for sharing, Niki, and best of luck with your newest novel. |
