There are numerous flashbacks between ancient and modern times; a difficult technique to accomplish without loosing continuity - Ms. Colwell handled it seamlessly. I have a pretty good grasp of both religious and art history and I still was not always sure where fiction met fact; It is brilliantly interwoven. The ending was unexpected and well presented (and did I say Unexpected). A story of faith and courage, of love and betrayal, of loss and redemption and above all a story of family and loyalty.
